LOS ANGELES -- Two tremendous battles in the shot put and an age group world record in the 200 meters highlighted a tremendous day at the Tommy "Tiny" Lister Classic Saturday at Jesse Owens Track.

Chris Figures defended his title in the open shot put with a toss of 66-10, Abby Ruston won the women's shot put with a toss of 58-9.50 and Gault ran the 200 meters in 21.80. All three competitors received $3,000 watches presented to them by Lister, the 1982 NCAA Division II shot put champion while at Cal State L.A.

Figures won the event for the second year in a row, edging Noah Bryant, who was second in 66-00.25. Ruston won the women's shot put, narrowly finishing ahead of Vivian Chuckwuemeka, who was second in 55-7.75.

Gault, the former National Football League wide receiver, ran the blazing 21.80 in the 200 meters.

"What a great meet this was," Cal State L.A. Head Coach Christopher Asher said. "And what a phenomenal shot put competition. Tiny really brought out the best in them."

Cal State L.A.'s men's and women's track and field teams also produced some great results. Desi Burt got a personal best in the javelin by more than 20 feet while winning the event with a throw of 207-1. Brandon Crawford got a personal best in the 200 with a time of 21.90 and Francis Nunez recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump with a leap of 23-6.75.

For the women, Shianne Smith ran the second-fastest 100 meter time in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with a time of 12.14. She also recorded a personal best in the long jump with a mark of 18-3.25 while finishing second.

Former Cal State L.A. All-American Eugene Hutchinson was the winner in the high jump with a mark of 6-10.75, while Omonike Kotey, who won the national indoor triple jump championship for the Golden Eagles, won the triple jump while competing unattached with a mark of 38-9.50.
