LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.’s women’s basketball team has added sophomore forward Amber Coleman to its program, Golden Eagle head coach Janell Jones announced on Monday.
Amber Coleman, a 6-foot-2-inch forward from Mercer University, has joined the Cal State L.A. program, Jones said. Coleman appeared in 28 games last season for Mercer as a freshman and averaged 1.5 points and 1.8 rebounds. She averaged 7.4 minutes of playing time per game. Coleman had a team-high seven rebounds to go along with six points in a win over Winthrop on Dec. 30, 2009.
“Amber’s freshman year was an opportunity for her to figure out what it takes to play at the college level,” Jones said. “She has a strong body and is ferocious on the boards. She is a post who can run the floor and finish well around the rim. Amber’s best days are ahead of her as she continues to develop and improve her game.”
Coleman joined Mercer after lettering for three years in basketball and volleyball at Southside High School in South Carolina. She helped the Southside basketball team go from 3-22 in her sophomore season to 23-3 and a 2A Regional Championship in her senior season. She became the first Southside player to reach 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 points in a career and she earned All-State honors as a junior and senior. She was the team Most Valuable Player her last two seasons at Southside and was part of the North vs. South All-Star game. She also earned All-Conference honors as a sophomore, junior and senior.
