LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.’s women’s basketball team has added talented guard Gretchen Tiernan to its program, Golden Eagle head coach Janell Jones announced on Thursday.
Tiernan was a combo guard at the University of the Pacific, where she earned All-Big West honorable mention as a sophomore in 2009. She averaged 8.4 points per game and was especially effective from 3-point range. She knocked down 59 of her 3-point attempts to lead the Tigers and that total also led the Big West Conference during the regular season.
“Gretchen will give us instant firepower. Her leadership, game savvy and competitive spirit will greatly enhance our team,” Jones said. “Gretchen is a versatile, combo guard who can play at either the point or shooting guard position.”
Tiernan hit a season-best seven 3-pointers and scored a season-high 21 points against Cal State Northridge on Jan. 2, 2009 and came back to score 20 points against Saint Mary’s College two days later. In those two back-to-back games, Tiernan hit 13 of her 3-point attempts. She appeared in 29 games, started 19 times and was the team’s third-leading scorer.
Tiernan came to Pacific from American River College, where she averaged 19.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game in her one season with the program. She was named to the California Junior College All-State second team.
She graduated from Roseville High School, where she averaged 15.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
