Wiley Representing Great Britain In Championships

STUTTGART, GERMANY -- Cal State L.A.'s All-American outfielder Sam Wiley has helped his Great Britain squad get off to a 2-2 start at the 2010 European Senior Championships.
Wiley went 1-for-3 with one run scored in Great Britain's 5-1 win over Spain on Monday. The victory lifted Great Britain to a 2-2 record after its first four games. Great Britain will face Greece on Tuesday to complete pool play. The championships run through Sunday, Aug. 1.
Wiley, who started at first base for Great Britain in its first four games, was the starting catcher on Monday.
In Great Britain's first first four games, Wiley is 4-for-15 with one home run, two RBI and four runs scored. He hit a two-run home run on Sunday to account for Great Britain's only two runs in a 12-2 loss to Italy.
In his last two games, Wiley is 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Great Britain opened the championships with a 10-1 win over Croatia on Friday. Great Britain then lost to Sweden, 4-1, on Saturday and fell to Italy, 11-2, on Sunday before rebounding to beat Spain, 5-1, on Monday.
Wiley enjoyed a banner 2010 season with Cal State L.A. He earned third-team Daktronics All-America honors as a utility player after seeing time at first base, catcher and right field for the Golden Eagles. He was earlier named to the first-team Daktronics All-West Region Baseball Team.
He led the Golden Eagles with a .433 batting average, nine home runs and 60 runs batted in. Wiley also led the team with a .691 slugging percentage and a .482 on-base percentage. His 28 extra-base hits also led the team.
Cal State L.A. Head Coach Vince Beringhele has three former players competing in the European Championships, including a pair from his assistant coaching days at UCLA. Former Bruins Nick Theodorou (Greece) and Jack Santora (Italy) are also representing their countries in the championships.
