MIRAMAR, FLA. – Cal State L.A.’s
Josh Como earned a silver medal in the triple jump Sunday for Team USA in the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships at the Miramar Ansin Sports Complex.
Como was second in the event behind the University of Florida’s Christian Taylor. He had his best jump of 52-4 on his fifth attempt. Taylor, who also won the long jump, captured the event with a mark of 54-8.
Team USA dominated the event with a record 74 total medals.
The meet featured athletes 23 years old and younger representing 32 member-nations, including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turk and Caicos Islands, United States Virgin Islands and the United States.
Two athletes for each event made up Team USA. Como qualified for the event with his personal best of 54-7.25 set at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 17. Como had the top mark for the NCAA Division II and was second only to Taylor in all of college track and field.
Como, who won California Collegiate Athletic Association titles in the triple jump and 4x100 relay, was named the CCAA Athlete of the Meet in early May, finished second in the nation in the triple jump at the NCAA Division II championships and earned a total of three All-America honors. He was an All-American in the triple jump, long jump and also the 4x100 relay. The Golden Eagles were third in the nation in the 4x100 relay and Como took sixth in the long jump to help Cal State L.A. to a sixth-place finish in the country.
Como was also named the NCAA Division II West Region Field Athlete of the Year and he was named Cal State L.A.’s Male Athlete of the Year along with teammate Damein White.
