LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.’s
Josh Como has been selected as a member of Team USA for the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships that will be held next month in Miramar, Florida.
The meet will be held on July 9-11 and will feature athletes 23 years old and younger representing 32 member-nations. The meet will be held at the Miramar Ansin Sports Complex.
The member-nations being represented include Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turk and Caicos Islands, United States Virgin Islands and the United States.
Two athletes for each event make up Team USA. Como and Christian Taylor of the University of Florida will represent Team USA in the triple jump. Como qualified for the event with his personal best of 54-7.25 set at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 17. Como had the top mark for the NCAA Division II and was second only to Taylor in all of college track and field.
Como, who won California Collegiate Athletic Association titles in the triple jump and 4x100 relay, was named the CCAA Athlete of the Meet in early May, finished second in the nation in the triple jump at the NCAA Division II championships and earned a total of three All-America honors. He was an All-American in the triple jump, long jump and also the 4x100 relay. The Golden Eagles were third in the nation in the 4x100 relay and Como took sixth in the long jump to help Cal State L.A. to a sixth-place finish in the country.
Como was also named the NCAA Division II West Region Field Athlete of the Year and he was named Cal State L.A.’s Male Athlete of the Year along with teammate Damein White.
He is one of three male athletes from California universities competing in the event. Cory Primm of UCLA and Charles Jock of UC Irvine are both running in the 800 meters. The triple jump will be contested on the final day of the meet, Sunday, July 11.
