LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed a successful final day at the California Collegiate Athletic Association championships.
The Golden Eagles captured four individual titles on the men's side and one on the women's side to highlight the final day of competition. Josh Como won the triple jump title, Damein White prevailed in the 200, Dominic McGiffert won in the 400 and the 4x100 relay team of Leve Ross, White, Como and McGiffert won the conference title as well. Jamilah St. Cyr capped a successful championships by winning the shot put title for the women.
Como was named the Athlete of the Meet, while McGiffert was named the Co-Newcomer of the Year in voting by the conference coaches.
Cal State L.A.'s women finished third in the conference, while the men were fifth.
Como, who has the top collegiate triple jump mark in the nation, easily won his speciality. He jumped 52-11 on his first attempt and won the competition by more than seven feet. Thomas Hopson was fourth in the event with a mark of 45-00.50.
White won a hotly-contested 200 meters over Cal Poly Pomona's Jonathan Williams, winning by one-hundredth of a second in 21.24. The championship was the second in the 200 meters for White, who also won in 2008. He took second in the 100 in 10.79, finishing just behind Williams.
McGiffert won the conference championship in the 400 meters with a time of 47.01, which improves his provisional qualifying mark and also earned all-conference honors in the 400 by taking third in 21.42.
Ross, White, Como and McGiffert combined to win the 4x100 relay with a time of 40.81.
Jordan Tyler also earned all-conference honors by placing third in the pole vault with a mark of 15-9.25.
St. Cyr captured the shot put championship with a season's best mark of 46-00.75, which is also a provisional qualifying mark. She also earned all-conference honors in the 100 hurdles by taking third in 14.12, which improves her provisional qualifying mark.
Moriah Jubrey earned second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 and teamed with St. Cyr, Brittany Manuel and Michelle Vaughner for a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay and with Manuel, Alisha Belt, and Jennifer Shoate for a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay.
Cal State L.A. will host the Last Chance Qualifier next Saturday, May 15, at Jesse Owens Track.
