Golden Eagles Enjoy Productive Day At CCAA Championships

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's and women's track and field teams got off to strong starts on Friday as the California Collegiate Athletic Association championships continued at UC San Diego.

Verlondon Harris won a conference title in the men's shot put, while Josh Como and Jamilah St. Cyr finished second in their events to highlight the day's activities. Sprinters Damein White, Dominic McGiffert and Moriah Jubrey each qualified for Saturday finals in two events.

Harris recorded a toss of 55-00.75 to win the conference title. Como, the nation's leading triple jumper, finished second in the long jump with a mark of 23-2.50. Como was participating in the long jump for only the second time this season.

St. Cyr, meanwhile, after finishing fifth in the heptathlon, came back to take second in the javelin with a mark of 138-5. The Golden Eagles earned extra points in that event when Karee Nordby took fourth with a toss of 125-2 and Tuekeha Huntley took eighth with a mark of 107-10.

Te'Ahnalin Harris earned points in the discus by placing seventh with a toss of 126-0.

Huntley finished fourth, St. Cyr was fifth and Ashley Fletcher placed seventh in the heptathlon to give the Golden Eagles 11 points in the event. Fletcher came back to finish fourth in the long jump with a mark of 5.59 meters and Tanyshia Ridley picked up a point by placing eighth in that event with a leap of 5.17 meters.

Michael Esquivel placed seventh in the decathlon with 5,690 points.

White won his heats in both the 100 and 200 with the second-fastest qualifying time in both events. He ran a 10.68 in the 100 and 21.44 in the 200. McGiffert qualified with the third-fastest time in the 200 and had the second-best time in the 400 after winning his heat in 49.10. Leve Ross also qualified in the 100 with the fifth-fastest time in 11.06.

Jubrey qualified with the second-best mark in the 100 in 12.17 and the third-fastest mark in the 200 in 25.07. She has automatic qualifying times in both events for the NCAA Championships. Brittany Manuel also qualified in the 200 with the fifth-best time (25.38) and the 400 with the fourth-best time (56.65). 

Cal State L.A. also had three qualify in the women's 100 high hurdles after St. Cyr was third in 14.39, Jennifer Shoate was fourth in 14.59 and Huntley was ninth in 15.76 in qualifying.

Esquivel was the eighth qualifier in the men's 110 hurdles in 16.56 and Pedro Lebron was the ninth qualifier in 16.64. Mark Malone qualified with the No. 6 time in the 400 hurdles (56.69) and Lebron was ninth in 58.59. Vijay Tidwell qualified in the 800 with the eighth-fastest time of 1:56.33.

UC San Diego took the top two places in the hepathlon with Stephanie LeFever winning with 5,161 points and Linda Rainwater taking second with 4,938 points. Kelly Clancey of Chico State was fourth with 4,863 points.

Huntley, who has the 12th best mark in the nation with a provisional qualifying total of 4,952 points, took fourth on Friday with 4,696 points. She had marks of 16-3.75 in the long jump, 109-11 in the javelin and 2:33.18 in the 800.

St. Cyr, completing the heptathlon for the first time this season, was as high as second in the competition until the last event. She took fifth with 4,544 points. She had marks of 16-10.75 in the long jump, 123-5 in the javelin and 3:04.13 in the 800 on Friday.

Fletcher was seventh with 4,338 points, which was right on her previous best. She had marks of 18-2.25 in the long jump, 103-9 in the javelin and 2:47.91 in the 800.

The meet will conclude on Saturday.
