LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's and women's track and field teams got the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships off to a promising start.
The Golden Eagles had two of the top four and three of the top six heptathles and a decathlete in seventh place after the first day of competition at UC San Diego. Both competitions will conclude on Friday, while the bulk of the meet begins in earnest. The meet concludes on Saturday.
Jamilah St. Cyr rode a sensational effort in the shot put to vault into a tie for second place with 2,993 points after four events in the heptathlon, while Tuekeha Huntley was also in solid position, holding fourth place with 2,948 points. Ashley Fletcher also had a strong first day and is in sixth place with 2,632 points.
St. Cyr also had marks of 14.79 in the 100 hurdles, 4-10.50 in the high jump and 26.85 in the 200 meters. She trails only UC San Diego's Stephanie LeFever, who leads with 3,121 points. She is also tied with Linda Rainwater for second.
Huntley, who has a provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon, had marks of 15.29 in the 100 hurdles, 5-3.25 in the high jump, 36-5.75 in the shot put and 26.04 in the 200.
Fletcher had marks of 15.19 in the 100 hurdles, 4-10.50 in the high jump, 30-8.25 in the shot put and 26.93 in the 200.
In the decathlon, Michael Esquivel is in seventh after the first day, when five of the 10 events were contested. He has 2,916 points. He had marks of 11.98 in the 100, 6.03 meters in the high jump, 35-1 in the shot put, 5-5.75 in the high jump and 54.45 in the 400.
Chico State's J. Patrick Smith leads after one day with 3,686 points.
St. Cyr improved her provisional qualifying mark in the shot put with a season's best 45-8.
