Meet Results
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cal State L.A.’s men’s and women’s track and field teams netted one All-America award and put themselves in position for a few more Thursday in the opening day of the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track Complex.
Josh Como earned All-America honors in the long jump with a sixth-place finish and the Golden Eagles qualified for three more finals on Thursday. In addition,
Tuekeha Huntley had a strong first day in the heptathlon and is ninth after four events. The top eight in each event earn All-America honors.
Como, who will take the nation’s top mark into the triple jump competition on Saturday, had a season’s-best effort of 24-3.75 in the long jump on Thursday. He entered the championships with the ninth-best mark, but eclipsed his previous best of 24-3 on his first of six jumps. Nafee Harris of Indiana (Pa.) won the national title in the event with a leap of 26-1.50.
Senior
Damein White finished fifth in the 100-meter prelims with a time of 10.48. That was just off his qualifying mark of 10.44, which was seventh-fastest entering the championships. The 100 final will be held Saturday at 4:15 p.m. PST.
Senior
Moriah Jubrey squeezed into the 100 women’s finals after posting the eighth-fastest time in the prelims on Thursday at 11.78. Her best mark this season is 11.65.
The men’s 4x100 relay team of
Leve Ross, White, Como and
Dominic McGiffert qualified for Saturday’s final with the fifth-fastest time in prelims on Thursday of 40.50. That mark is the best this season for the relay team, which had the third-fastest time in the nation entering the championships at 40.67.
Huntley, meanwhile, was able to post a lifetime first-day best in the heptathlon with 3,086 points. Her previous best this season after one day was 2,948 points. Huntley posted marks of 15.18 in the 100 hurdles, 5-4.50 in the high jump, 38-3.25 in the shot put and 25.45 in the 200. Huntley came into the nationals with the 14th-best mark in the nation of 4,952 points.
The women’s 4x100 relay team of
Jamilah St. Cyr, Jubrey,
Brittany Manuel and
Jennifer Shoate did not qualify for the finals after running a time of 46.27. The Golden Eagles had the ninth-fastest time on the day and the top eight reached the finals. Cal State L.A. came into the competition with the No. 3 time in the country of 45.90.
In addition, McGiffert was 10th in the 400 prelims and did not qualify for the finals with a time of 47.05, which was just off his season’s-best time of 47.01. McGiffert had the 11th-best qualifying mark entering Thursday’s prelims.
Manuel was 18th in the women’s 400 with a time of 55.77, which was just off her best time this season of 55.75. She had the 19th-fastest qualifying time entering the prelims.
The competition will continue on Friday with finals scheduled for
Verlondon Harris and
Jamilah St. Cyr in the men’s and women’s shot put. Huntley will conclude competition in the heptathlon and prelims will be held for Jubrey in the 200, White and McGiffert in the men’s 200, St. Cyr in the 100 hurdles and Manuel,
Alisha Belt, Jubrey and Shoate in the 4x400 relay.
The three-day meet concludes on Saturday.
