SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had to settle for mixed results Friday in the opening day of a four-game series with San Francisco State.

After escaping with a 5-4 win in the opening game of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, the Golden Eagles managed only six hits in the nightcap and dropped a 5-1 decision. Cal State L.A. (6-10, 4-6 CCAA) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the opener.

Cliff Quick had a productive day for the Golden Eagles. He had five hits in the doubleheader and also picked up the save in the opener. Quick came on in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and one out and the Golden Eagles clinging to a 5-3 lead. He got the second out, walked in a run to make it 5-4 and got the final out on a fly out to center.

The Golden Eagles had little success against San Francisco State's Patrick Haugen in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. picked up only six hits in the game, three by Quick and two by Joe Park. Quick doubled in Park in the fifth inning for the Golden Eagles' only run.

Wally Goodline was the pitching star in the first game. He worked seven strong innings and allowed six hits and only one earned run, while walking two and striking out six. Matt Stropoli kept the Gators scoreless in the eighth inning, but ran into trouble in the ninth. He got one out in the inning, but surrendered two singles and two walks and left after forcing in a run.

The Golden Eagles trailed entering the top of the sixth. Quick doubled and Chris Matzner picked up an infield single. Mario Ramirez walked to load the bases and Quick scored on a groundout by Sam Wiley. Matt Miraldi drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder's choice grounder.

Cal State L.A. made it 4-2 in the eighth when Ramirez doubled with two outs and scored on a run-scoring single by Miraldi. The Golden Eagles upped their lead to 5-2 on a run-scoring single by Quick.

The Gators scored two runs in the first inning of the nightcap and never trailed. Matt Strom pitched 4 1/3 innings for the Golden Eagles and gave up seven hits and five runs, three of them earned. J.R. Bromberg blanked the Gators over the final 1 2/3 innings while allowing only one hit.

The threat of rain on Saturday prompted the teams to play a doubleheader on Friday. Weather permitting, the teams will play a single game on Saturday beginning at hoon and conclude the series on Sunday with a single game beginning at 11 a.m.
