Smith, St. Cyr Fall Just Short Of All-American Honors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Cal State L.A.'s women's indoor track and field team had a day of close calls on the opening day of competiton in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Shianne Smith was ninth in the long jump and
Jamilah St. Cyr was 10th in the 60-meter high hurdles in competition at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The two-day championships will conclude on Saturday.
Smith recorded a mark of 18-3 3/4 in the long jump and was just one spot out of an All-American award. The top eight in each event earn All-America recognition and Smith missed the eighth spot by 3/4 of an inch.
St. Cyr also came close to earning All-America honors. She was 10th in the hurdles, just one-tenth of a second out of a top-eight qualifying position.
Cal State L.A. will have two more chances on Saturday. The 4x400 relay team of
Brittany Manuel, Smith,
Jennifer Shoate and
Moriah Jubrey has the fourth-best qualifying time in the nation and Smith will also be competing in the heptathlon.
