2009 Cal State L.A. Women’s Tennis – Season Summary
Cal State L.A.’s women’s tennis team battled through a disappointing season filled with tough losses and frustrating injuries.
The Golden Eagles, who had made the NCAA playoffs in the previous two seasons, fell short of that goal in 2009 and struggled to a 3-10 overall finish. Cal State L.A. was also 2-8 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action and finished fifth in the conference.
The losses started in the off-season when Ioana Comsa, the CCAA Player of the Year in 2008, did not return for what would have been her sophomore season. She was the Golden Eagles’ first conference Player of the Year since 1993 in voting done by the conference coaches.
Injuries then began to take a toll. Princess Manasseh suffered an injured shoulder against Hawaii-Hilo on March 5 and missed the remainder of the season. Linda Majzlikova missed the last seven matches of the year due to a foot injury and No. 1 singles player Bojana Ducanovic battled through injuries as well down the stretch.
Cal State L.A. saw the middle of its lineup bolstered by a pair of newcomers, junior Adriana Espinosa at No. 3 singles and freshman Marine Prevost at No. 4 singles and junior Lana Lamesic returned from a wrist injury in 2008 to play well at No. 2 singles.
The Golden Eagles were able to post a pair of victories over CCAA foe Cal State San Bernardino and also recorded a non-conference win over Western New Mexico. Cal State L.A., though, lost its last six matches of the season.
Cal State L.A. hosted its annual invitational in early February, although rain washed out the semi-finals and finals. Ducanovic reached the semis of Singles Flight 1-2, while Lamesic and Prevost reached the semi-finals of Doubles Flight 3-4.
