SAN ANGELO, TX – Cal State L.A.’s men’s and women’s track and field teams saw their multi-event competitors put an All-American start to Day 2 of the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships and then had a triple-jumper join the fun.

Josh Linker finished fifth in the decathlon and Shianne Smith finished sixth in the heptathlon for the Golden Eagles Friday at the LeGrand Sports Complex at Angelo State University. Both Linker and Smith put together outstanding efforts in the two-day events and finished with marks around 200 points better than their qualifying marks. Later in the day, Sierra Backus earned the fourth All-America honor of her career by finishing fifth in the triple jump.

The top eight in each event earn All-America honors.

Moriah Jubrey qualified for the finals of the 200 meters after finishing sixth overall and third in her heat with a time of 23.77. She also qualified for the finals of the 100 meters on Thursday. The 23.77 is Jubrey's fastest time of the season, eclipsing her qualifying mark of 23.85.

Vivien Wadeck qualified in the 5,000 by finishing second in her heat and fourth overall with a time of 17:20.59. A field of 12 qualified for Saturday's final.

The women's 4x400 relay team, though, of Tuekeha Huntley, Smith, Jennifer Shoate and Jubrey did not qualify for the finals after finishing sixth in its heat and 11th overall.

In the men's high jump, Christopher Hicks finished in a tie for 11th after clearing 6-7.50. He missed All-America honors by just two inches -- the eighth-place finisher cleared 6-9.50. The Golden Eagles also had the women’s 4x400 relay team running in prelims later Friday night.

Linker, who was eighth in the decathlon after the first day, wound up with 6,993 points, far surpassing the 6,782 points he accumulated while winning the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship. He surged as high as fourth place after a 15-9 effort in the pole vault, slipped back after the ninth event, the javelin (153-5), before finishing strong in the 1,500 (4:42.65) to secure his All-America award. Earlier on Friday, he had a mark of 16.18 in the 110 hurdles and 117-1 in the discus.

Smith, too, surpassed her qualifying mark. She finished sixth with 5,079 points, which was better than the 4,868 points she had while finishing third in the CCAA Championships. She was sixth after the opening day and held her position after strong efforts in the long jump (18-2.50), javelin (99-0) and 800 meters (2:18.28) on Friday.

Backus saved her best jump for last and her personal best mark of 40-1.25 was good enough to give her a fifth-place finish in the triple jump. Backus had also finished fifth in the 2007 Outdoor National Championships and has taken fourth in the nation in the indoor triple jump in 2008 and 2009.
