SAN ANGELO, TX – Cal State L.A.’s men’s and women’s track and field teams got the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships off to an outstanding start Thursday at the LeGrand Sports Complex at Angelo State University.
Moriah Jubrey ran a season’s best 11.74 to qualify for the finals in the 100 meters,
Shianne Smith is sixth after the first day of the heptathlon,
Josh Linker is eighth after the first day of the decathlon,
Karla Alburez qualified for the finals of the steeplechase and the women’s 4x100 relay has qualified for the finals.
Ashley Fletcher, who was a late addition to the championship field and had to take a red-eye flight to Texas, finished 18th in the long jump with a mark of 16-8.
Jubrey qualified for the 100 finals on Saturday by finishing second in her heat and sixth overall with a time of 11.74. That edged her previous best time of 11.78 set at the Tiny Lister Classic on April 25. Jubrey also teamed with
Sierra Backus,
Tanyshia Ridley and Smith for a time of 45.63, which was the third-fastest qualifying time in the 4x100. The 45.63 is also a season’s best, beating the 45.77 set on May 9 at Occidental.
Smith stands sixth in the heptathlon with a first-day total of 3,037. She was second in the 200 and earned 910 points with a time of 24.75. She also set season’s best marks in the high jump with a clearance of 5-3 and also in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.78. She also had a mark of 32-4.25 in the shot put.
Her first-day total is 147 points ahead of her pace at the CCAA Championships, when she earned her automatic qualifying mark of 4,868. She entered the nationals with the ninth-best qualifying mark.
Linker, meanwhile, is in eighth place in the decathlon after setting new season’s best in all five events on Thursday. He has 3,648 points after one day, which is 197 points better than his first-day total at the CCAA Championships. He posted marks of 11.20 in the 100, 22-3.50 in the long jump, 39-5.75 in the shot put, 6-1.50 in the high jump and 50.94 in the 400 meters. Linker, the CCAA champion in the decathlon, entered the championships with the sixth-best qualifying mark.
The heptathlon and decathlon will both conclude on Friday.
Alburez finished second in her heat and qualified fourth overall in the steeplechase with a time of 10:55.93. She entered the championships with the fourth-fastest time in the country at 10:43.62.
Liliana Hernandez also ran on Thursday and finished ninth in her heat with a time of 11:13.63. She was 14
th overall and did not make the 12-runner final field.
The top eight finishers in each event at the national championships will earn All-America honors.
