NEW ORLEANS – Cal State L.A. assistant track and field coach Kendra Reimer has been named the NCAA Division II West Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced on Monday.
Reimer coaches the multis, jumps, sprints and throws for the Golden Eagles. She is in her third year with the program. Four of her athletes earned NCAA Division II qualifying marks in outdoor track and field and three qualified for the indoor nationals, including two who earned All-America honors.
Cal State L.A. also had California Collegiate Athletic Association champions in the 200 meters, long jump and triple jump with Reimer’s assistance.
“Kendra has done a remarkable job with our jump and multi-even performers. Sierra Backus, Shianne Smith and Josh Linker have all qualified for the NCAA Championships, Tuekeha Huntley has qualified for the USA Junior National Championships this summer and she has also guided Desi Burt as a post-collegiate performer who has qualified for the USA Track and Field Championships this summer,” Cal State L.A. Head Track and Field Coach Christopher Asher said. “Her athletes have also crossed over well in the sprints with Denina Speights, Sierra Backus, Tuekeha Huntley and Shianne Smith being part of both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays which rank high nationally. She is very deserving of this award.”
Reimer competed at Texas A&M University and was a top performer in the heptathlon. She earned All-America honors and All-Conference recognition. She later moved to Southern California to train for the 2004 Olympic Trials, where she placed 11th in the heptathlon.
She had a national high-school record in the heptathlon at New Braunfels High School and was the runner-up for the 1998 High School Athlete of the Year behind Angela Williams. She was a Junior National Champion in 1998 and placed seventh at the World Junior Track and Field Championships.
Cal State L.A.’s men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will be competing in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships beginning on Thursday in San Angelo, Texas at Angelo State University.
