2009 Cal State L.A. Women’s Indoor Track and Field – Season Summary
 
Cal State L.A.’s women’s indoor track and field team completed another solid season that included All-America honors for a pair of Golden Eagles.
 
The Golden Eagles finished in a tie for 26th in the nation at the NCAA Division II Championships at the Yeoman Field House in Houston, TX. Cal State L.A. was fifth among West Region programs.
 
Two Golden Eagles earned All-America honors in the competition. Sierra Backus finished fourth in the triple jump for the second straight year. She picked up her fourth All-America award in the process. Sophomore newcomer Moriah Jubrey made her first trip to the nationals a success and finished eighth in the 400 meters. She had a best time of 56.64 during the season.
 
Cal State L.A. had a third qualifier for the nationals in senior Denina Speights, who had an automatic qualifying time in the long jump. Speights and Backus both competed in the long jump, but neither reached the finals. Speights wound up 11th in the nation, while Backus was 13th.
 
The top eight competitors in each event earned All-America status.

Final National Finish: 26th (tie)
All-America: Sierra Backus (triple jump, 4th), Moriah Jubrey (400, 8th).
Nationals Qualifiers: Sierra Backus (triple jump, long jump), Moriah Jubrey (400 meters), Denina Speights (long jump).
2009 Recap: Cal State L.A.’s women’s indoor track and field team enjoyed a successful season that was highlighted by All-America performances from Sierra Backus and Moriah Jubrey. Backus finished fourth in the triple jump for the second straight year with a mark of 38-6. She picked up her fourth All-America award overall. Moriah Jubrey earned her first All-America award at Cal State L.A. by finishing eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 57.61. Denina Speights also qualified for the nationals in the long jump and was 11th with a mark of 17-9. Backus was 13th in that event with a mark of 17-5.25. Cal State L.A. finished with six points and wound up in a tie for 26th place in the country.
