moriah jubrey
HOUSTON, TX – Cal State L.A.’s Moriah Jubrey will have her shot at earning All-America honors on Saturday thanks to a strong qualifying performance on Friday at the Yeoman Field House on the campus of the University of Houston.

Jubrey finished second in her heat of the 400 meters at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships on Friday and had the fourth-fastest time overall to advance to Saturday’s final. Nine runners qualified and the top eight will earn All-America honors.

Denina Speights and Sierra Backus both competed for Cal State L.A. in the long jump on Friday, but neither advanced to the final. Speights finished 11th overall with a mark of 17-9, while Backus finished 13th with a mark of 17-7.25.

Jubrey, a sophomore who earned junior college All-America honors at Riverside City College last year, finished second in her heat with a time of 56.90. That time was fourth among the 14 runners hoping to reach Saturday’s final. The time was the fastest of the indoor season for Jubrey, who qualified for Friday’s prelims with a provisional qualifying time of 56.94. She had the seventh-fastest qualifying time entering the meet.

Jubrey will compete at approximately 1:50 p.m. PST on Saturday. Backus, who has the No. 2 mark in the country in the triple jump, will compete in her specialty beginning at 2:30 p.m. PST.
