The Golden Eagles, who finished the regular season ranked seventh in the nation, first in the West Region and advanced to the NCAA West Region championship game for the third time in four years, had four first-team selections for the first time in the program’s history.
The NSCAA honors were decided in voting done by the region’s coaches. There were three 11-player teams selected by the coaches.
Cino, Daly and Gomez earned first-team All-Region honors from a second organization this year. Earlier, they were named to the Daktronics All-West Region first team in voting done by the region’s sports information directors.
Daly earned All-Region honors for a second straight season. Last year, he earned second-team honors from the NSCAA and Daktronics. Cino, Gomez and Cucue earned their first All-Region honors this year.
Cino, a senior forward, completed his second season with the Golden Eagles. He led the team in scoring with 12 goals and eight assists and 32 points. He had a pair of goals for the Golden Eagles’ in their 5-3 NCAA playoff win over Cal State San Bernardino.
The 12 goals were the most in a season for a Cal State L.A. player since Morten Marthinsen had 13 in 2005.
Gomez, a senior midfielder, completed an outstanding four-year career for the Golden Eagles. He had a career season in 2009 and was second on the team in scoring with eight goals and two assists and 18 points. He had a three-goal hat trick in the Golden Eagles’ 5-3 playoff win over Cal State San Bernardino.
Daly, a senior defender, earned All-Region honors for a second straight year. He earned second-team honors last season. He was a main reason why Cal State L.A.’s defense was one of the nation’s best and allowed only 20 goals in 23 games this season.
Cucue, a senior midfielder, completed an outstanding two-year career for the Golden Eagles. He scored three goals for Cal State L.A. in 2009 and was a key part of the Golden Eagles’ success. He appeared in 43 games during his Cal State L.A. career.
Cal State L.A. recorded 18 wins in 2009, which is the second-highest total in program history and the most since the 1981 squad posted 20 victories and advanced to the NCAA Division II championship game.
