WALNUT CREEK – Cal State L.A.’s Federico Cino, Aza Gomez and Mickey Daly earned first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors to highlight a group of six Golden Eagles to pick up All-CCAA recognition, the conference announced Thursday.

In addition, Chris Chamides was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the second time. He was previously honored as the men’s soccer Coach of the Year in 2004.

Simon Volk earned second-team honors and Jason Swope and Miguel Cucue received honorable mention.

The voting is done by the conference coaches.

Cal State L.A., ranked sixth in the nation and first in the NCAA Division II West Region, was 17-2-1 in the regular season and 13-2-1 in conference play. The Golden Eagles won the South Division for the second time in four years with a conference-best 40 points and earned the No. 1 seed in the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament that begins Friday at Cal State Stanislaus.

Daly, a senior defender, earned postseason honors for a second straight season, although this is his first All-CCAA award. He earned second-team All-Region recognition from two organizations in 2008 after being left off the All-Conference team. He has been an outstanding defender in his two years with the program and has chipped in with four assists this season as well.

Cino, a senior forward, picked up his first All-CCAA award. He leads the team in scoring with 10 goals, eight assists and 28 points. He also picked up ESPN The Magazine All-District VIII academic honors earlier this week.

Gomez, a four-year contributor for the Golden Eagles, earned his first All-CCAA award. He is tied for third on the team in goals with five, including a pair of game-winners. He has played in 80 games for the Golden Eagles in his career.

Volk, a sophomore defender, was one of the top newcomers in the conference and made an immediate impact with the Golden Eagles this season. He started all 20 matches and solidifying a defense that has allowed only 15 goals and posted eight shutouts.
Swope, a junior forward, picked up his second All-CCAA honor. He also received honorable mention in 2007 and came back strongly this season after missing the 2008 campaign because of injury. He is second on the team in goals with six and second in points with 16.

Cucue, a senior midfielder, picks up his first All-CCAA award. He played in 18 of the team’s 20 games this regular season and has three goals. He has six goals in his two years with the program.

Chamides, in his seventh season as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Cal State L.A., guided the Golden Eagles to a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament for the first time. The Golden Eagles are making their fourth straight appearance in the conference tourney. Cal State L.A. also earned its first-ever national No. 1 ranking earlier this season.

Cal State L.A. will face CCAA North Division champion and No. 4 seed Sonoma State in a first-round match on Friday at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles and Seawolves are ranked 1-2 in the West Region and are meeting for the third straight year in the first round of the conference tournament.
