LEXINGTON, KY – Cal State L.A.’s women’s volleyball star
Gabriela Bulawczyk earned her second straight All-Region honor from the American Coaches Volleyball Association on Tuesday.
Bulawczyk earned 2009 AVCA All-West Region honorable mention after her second outstanding season with the Golden Eagles. Bulawczyk led the Golden Eagles in kills for a second straight season and was instrumental in Cal State L.A. advancing to the West Region championship match for the first time since 2005.
Bulawczyk finished the season with 434 kills, which was the sixth-best single-season total in the program’s history. Her 1,155 attacks were tied for seventh on the Cal State L.A. all-time single-season list. She also had 358 digs, which is the 10th-best single-season total.
She was second on the team in digs and also placed second in service aces with 28.
Bulawczyk actually had better statistics than she did last year when she was named to the AVCA All-West Region first team and earned third-team All-America honors. Her hitting percentage was 24 points higher, climbing from .245 to .269. Her kills per set dipped slightly from 3.77 per set to 3.56, but she also had much fewer swings and was much more efficient.
In her two years with Cal State L.A., Bulawczyk had 837 kills and 680 digs.
The Golden Eagles finished the 2009 season with a 23-9 record. Cal State L.A. drew the No. 6 seed in the West Regionals and beat No. 3 Sonoma State in five sets and No. 2 UC San Diego in straight sets before falling to No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino in the championship match last week. Bulawczyk,
Zuzana Cizova,
Mary Laupepa,
Kaylynne De La Rosa and
Stefanie Gay were all named to the West Regional All-Tournament Team.
