EVANSVILLE, IN -- Cal State L.A.'s Vivien Wadeck turned in another sensational performance Saturday in the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships at Southern Indiana University.
Wadeck finished seventh and turned in the best performance for a Cal State L.A. runner since 1994. Her time over a 6,000-meter course was 21:02.8 and she earned All-America honors for a second straight season.
Wadeck finished eighth last season to earn her first All-America honor in cross country. Wadeck's finishes the past two years are the best for a Golden Eagle since Marisa Avendano took sixth place in 1994.
Seattle Pacific's Jessica Pixler won the individual championship for a third straight season. Western Washington's Sarah Porter was second in 20:30.1 and Wadeck was the next runner from the West Region to finish. She finished well ahead of the next California Collegiate Athletic Association runner, Chico State's Tori Tyler, who was 27th.
There were 184 runners in the championship field. Adams State won the team title with 73 points, while Grand Valley State was second with 81. Missouri Southern was third with 104 points, Seattle Pacific was fourth with 151 points and Alaska Anchorage was fifth with 158 points.
Wadeck ran as an individual on Saturday because Cal State L.A.'s team did not qualify for nationals after finishing eighth in the West Regional two weeks ago.
The All-America finish capped a second outstanding cross country season for Wadeck. She won the CCAA championship for the second straight year and also earned All-West Region honors for a second straight season when she finished 10th two weeks ago.
