SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team saw its impressive run through the NCAA Division II playoffs come to an abrupt end Saturday night.
Cal State L.A., after beating the No. 3 and No. 2 seeds in the opening two rounds, came up short in the West Region championship match, falling to No. 1 seed and tourney host Cal State San Bernardino, 25-18, 25-18, 25-15. The Golden Eagles, the No. 6 seeds, finish the season with a 23-9 record.
The Golden Eagles, one night after hitting .333 against UC San Diego, were shut down by Cal State San Bernardino and held to a hitting percentage of .065. The Coyotes (32-1), the No. 1 seed in the West Region and ranked second in the nation, hit .298 and enjoyed a 42-26 edge in kills.
The Coyotes had a 6-3.5 advantage in blocks and had more aces, 5-3.
The Golden Eagles, after dropping the first set, appeared poised to even the match after taking a 13-7 lead in the second set. Cal State San Bernardino, though, went on an 11-0 run to grab an 18-13 lead and Cal State L.A. never recovered.
Ashtin Hall led the Coyotes with 13 kills in 23 swings for a .522 percentage. Jane Chafeh added 12 kills, although the Golden Eagles did a decent job defending the first-team All-CCAA pick, holding her to a .143 hitting percentage.
Marquis Mora led the Golden Eagles with nine kills in 14 swings for a .571 percentage. Gabriela Bulawczyk and Zuzana Cizova had six kills each, but Cal State L.A. struggled to find any kind of offensive rhythm against Cal State San Bernardino's outstanding defense. Cizova led Cal State L.A. with 11 digs, while Stefanie Gay and Bulawczyk had eight digs each.
Kaylynne De La Rosa had 23 set assists and five digs.
Cal State San Bernardino set the tone early by taking a quick 5-1 lead in the opening set and the Coyotes led the entire first set.
Cal State L.A. started the second set well and opened up a 13-7 lead, prompting two quick timeouts by the Coyotes. A block by De La Rosa, Laupepa and Bulawczyk, a kill by Bulawczyk and a kill by Laupepa gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the night.
The Coyotes, though, took care of that in a hurry, scoring the next 11 points and closing out the set on a 4-0 run.
Cal State L.A. was unable to mount any charges in the third set, falling behind 8-4 and never putting together a sustained rally. The Coyotes took a 22-15 lead and then closed out the match on an attack error, a block by Ashtin Hall and a kill by Hall.
Bulawczyk, Laupepa, Cizova, De La Rosa and Gay were all named to the West Region All-Tournament team.
