FULLERTON – Cal State L.A.’s women’s tennis team competed well in the Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiate Tournament this past weekend.
The Golden Eagles were the only NCAA Division II competitors in the field, which was made up of mostly Division-I programs. Players from Pepperdine, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount and Cal State Northridge picked up wins in the three singles and two doubles brackets.
The highlight of the tourney was the doubles play of Adriana Espinosa and Jillian Sangria, who advanced all the way to the semi-finals of the Flight "B" doubles.
Cal State L.A.’s No. 1 player, Dora Kiss went 1-1 in her two singles matches. She beat Cal State Fullerton’s Erin Wiesener, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in a first-round match in the Flight A singles before falling to Long Beach State’s Jaklin Alawi in the second round. Sangria also played in the “A” flight and lost to Marie Zalameda of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-1.
Espinosa, Linda Majzlikova and Lana Lamesic all lost first-round matches in the “B” flight. Espinosa lost to Anna Yang of Cal State Northridge, 6-1, 6-1, Majzlikova lost to Amy Markhoff of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 6-2, 6-2 and Lamesic lost to Monica Rodriguez of Cal State Fullerton, 6-2, 6-2.
In the “C” flight, Marine Prevost lost a hard-fought match to Summer Beaird of Concordia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, while Joyce Librando lost to Gabriela Horton of Cal State Bakersfield, 7-6, 6-2.
In doubles, Cal State L.A. got a strong performance from Espinosa and Sangria, won their fist two matches against NCAA Division I teams. They beat Lani Agsalud and Carla Arce of Cal State Fullerton in the first round, 8-0, and then edged Shauna Morgan and Bliss Nixon of Loyola Marymount, 9-8, before falling to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Joclyn Davis and Ashley Pane, 8-3.
Kiss and Majzlikova lost to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo team Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong, 8-0, in the Flight “A” doubles, while Librando and Lamesic lost to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Diane Filip and Alexa Lee, 8-2.
Cal State L.A. will compete next in the Cal State Northridge Matador Invitational on Nov. 11-13.
