Golden Eagles Fare Well In Opening Day Of ITA Regionals

POMONA – Cal State L.A.’s women’s tennis team had two newcomers advance to the Round of 16 in the 2009 Wilson/ITA West Region Championships Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona.
 
Senior Dora Kiss and freshman Jillian Sangria each advanced through two rounds, while junior Linda Majzlikova and senior Lana Lamesic won first-round matches before losing in the second round.
 
The Golden Eagles also had three doubles teams compete on Thursday. The team of Kiss and Majzlikova beat a team from Grand Canyon, 8-3, the team of Sangria and Joyce Librando beat a team from Dominican, 8-4 and the team of Adriana Espinosa and Lamesic lost to a team from Cal Poly Pomona, 9-8.
 
Kiss received a first-round bye and then swept past Mandy Prudhomme of Grand Canyon, 6-0, 6-0. Sangria, meanwhile, beat Lexy Harrington of Cal State Stanislaus, 6-2, 6-0, before beating Cal State San Bernardino’s Isabella Fraczek, 6-1, 6-3.
 
Majzlikova beat Cal State San Bernardino’s Janay Palicte, 6-0, 6-0, before falling to UC San Diego’s Katie Mulloy, 6-1, 6-4. Lamesic outlasted Haley Hickcock of Sonoma State, 6-4, 4-6 (10-6), but then lost to Cal Poly Pomona’s Jackie Trendt, 7-5, 6-1.
 
Two other Golden Eagles lost in first-round matches. Adriana Espinosa fell to Caroline Huston of Sonoma State, 6-4, 6-3, while Marine Prevost fell to Heather Cotter of Cal State Stanislaus, 4-6, 6-4 (10-8).
 
The singles and doubles champions from the regional event will earn an automatic berth to the 2009 ITA National Small College Championships, which is scheduled for Oct. 15-18 and is being hosted by the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. The winner of the Small College Championships will receive wild-cards into the Division I ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Nov. 5-8 at Yale University.
 
Players from Cal State L.A., Cal Poly Pomona, UC San Diego, Cal State Stanislaus, Sonoma State, Cal State San Bernardino, Grand Canyon, Dixie State, Dominican and BYU-Hawaii are competing.
