LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's team came oh-so-close to joining a logjam atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Instead, the Golden Eagles find themselves in a two-way tie for sixth place, one game back of five teams tied for first after a disappointing 57-56 loss at UC San Diego Friday night in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (13-6, 9-6 CCAA) is now tied with Sonoma State, one game back of conference leaders Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona, Chico State and Humboldt State.

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team threw quite a scare into the No. 1-ranked team in the country, but saw its upset bid fall short. The Golden Eagles led by as many as eight points in the first half and trailed by just two points with four minutes remaining, but UC San Diego closed the game out with a big run to remain undefeated with a 78-63 win in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (13-6, 11-4) had its six-game winning streak snapped, while the Tritons (21-0, 15-0) retained its stranglehold on the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead.

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saw its season-opening two-game winning streak come to an end Friday at California Baptist's Totman Field. The Golden Eagles, who had scored 23 in the first two games of a four-game series, managed only two on Friday and fell to the Lancers, 7-2, in a non-conference game. Cal State L.A. (2-1) stranded 12 runners on base and California Baptist (1-2) took control of the contest with a four-run fifth inning.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead after four innings and beat the Lancers, 8-0, Thursday evening at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (2-0) has scored 23 runs in its first two games against California Baptist (0-2). The Golden Eagles prevailed by a 15-5 count on Wednesday in Riverside.

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.’s women’s tennis team put up a battle and then some in its 2012 season opener Wednesday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. The Golden Eagles and NAIA power Concordia battled until dark before Concordia prevailed, 6-3, in a match that took nearly five hours to complete and finished under the lights.

RIVERSIDE – Cal State L.A.’s baseball team started its 2012 season with a bang. The Golden Eagles collected 18 hits and got solid efforts from four pitchers to beat California Baptist, 15-5, in the season opener for both programs Wednesday at Totman Stadium. Cal State L.A. scored three runs in the opening inning and never looked back. The Golden Eagles scored runs in seven of the nine innings played in the opener of a four-game series.

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.’s baseball program is set to open its 2012 season on Wednesday and the Golden Eagles had a player named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America team. The Golden Eagles will begin its season with a four-game series against California Baptist that begins on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Riverside. Cal State L.A. will have its home opener on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
